Big Brothers Big Sisters Match Story: Big Sister Alejandra and Little Sister Maria

Flourishing Friendship

Big Sister Alejandra and Little Sister Maria’s connection was so strong that they’ve transitioned from a school-based match to a community-based one to allow for more time and activities. This move is a huge step for the match and demonstrates their commitment to each other. It shows that both Alejandra and Maria are invested in building a long-term relationship.

Where it Started

When they first met, Maria was shy about speaking English and wasn’t interested in reading. But Alejandra, with her patient and consistent support, knew they could work together to overcome this. As Alejandra is also bilingual, she dedicated their time together to reading, working on English and math, and helping Maria find her voice. It wasn’t just about homework; it was about building Maria’s confidence.

“Alejandra has gotten her to read, and now Maria is starting to understand how important it is to read and do well in school.” – Zaira, Maria’s Mom has noticed a huge difference.

This growth has inspired Maria to feel more empowered in other areas of her life, like standing up for herself and speaking with school counselors when she needs to. Because of Alejandra’s support and mentorship, Maria has begun to realize her own potential.

Growing Together and Looking Ahead

The relationship between Alejandra and Maria is built on trust and consistency – making it so special. This duos’ dedication created trust and consistency that fostered a safe space for Maria to take risks and grow.

Looking ahead, Alejandra and Maria will continue to nurture a love for reading and build on Maria’s newfound self-assurance. This mentorship in Maria’s life allows for more exploration, finding new activities together, and building on their shared love for connection.
